What is Pterygium?

Pterygium Surgery

A pterygium is a small, pinkish growth of tissue on the surface of the eye. The growth of the tissue is often in a triangular shape and when not treated properly can result in a blurred vision. This usually happens when the surface of the eye changes its shape due to the growth of the tissue over the cornea.  At Cosmos Eye Care we have well equipped and trained doctors to handle such type of diseases. The most common cause of Pterygium is excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun. Other causes can be environmental irritants ( wind, dust, chemicals, air pollution etc.) and hereditary factors.

What are some signs and symptoms of Pterygium?

A pterygium can be detected with a slight redness and thickening in the corner of the eye. The growth can encroach the corneal surface. Other symptoms include:

  • Redness and inflammation of the eye
  • Foreign body sensation in the eye
  • Dryness/Tearing
  • Blurring or Obscuring of vision

How can Pterygium be treated?

The treatment of Pterygium usually depends upon the size and nature of the Pterygium and whether the vision has been affected. Namely there are two ways this can be treated:

Medication:

Short-term use of topical anti–inflammatory eye drops is usually recommended to reduce redness and inflammation. If dry eyes are also a challenge then lubricants can also be used to keep the eyes lubricated.

Surgery

In Pterygium, when it’s an advanced stage surgery is recommended which usually takes not more than 30 minutes. It’s recommended when the vision becomes obscured or blurred and it becomes problematic for the patient. During surgery, the pterygium is carefully removed and a section of the conjunctiva is taken from under the eyelid and is grafted onto the area where the pterygium was either using very fine dissolving sutures or using bioadhesive material ( glue ). At Cosmos Eye Care, we have trained and dedicated staff for Pterygium.
