First of all, I will like to highlight that Cosmos eye care doesn’t endorse the use of a single cracker either in Diwali or during normal days. But still, if you have to celebrate Diwali with Crackers, then you here is a list of things that you need to do to ensure to protect your eyes.
1.Maintain a safe distance from crackers
Every year there are thousands of people who suffer injuries to their eyes due to firecrackers. According to recent research, 43% of the injuries that happen in Diwali are somehow related to eyes and of this 72 % are children. Thus, whenever you light a cracker, light it at an arm’s length and watch it from 5m distance. Do not lean over the cracker as you burn it – crouch down and use a long candle or incense stick to light the firework.
2. Keep washing your eyes frequently
Due to an increase in pollution these days, there is constant itchiness in the eyes during the month of October/ November. If you are from Delhi/NCR then you have to be extra careful in taking care of your eyes as there is a lot of pollution due to stubble burning, crackers, etc.
The small particles present in the air during these days can enter your eyes and can cause itchiness, redness, chronic irritation, foreign body sensation or dry eyes. To avoid this wash your face at least 4-5 times a day. This will help in reducing the possibility of catching these diseases.
3. Use protective glasses everywhere you go
Most of the injuries that happen during the Diwali season are related to eyes. Try wearing protective eyeglasses whenever you are out and not just during the time of bursting crackers. This is because firecrackers like rockets can often misfire and can hit anyone out of nowhere. Wear only those protective glasses which are clinically tested and can withstand a strong impact as compared to your natural eyeglasses.
4. Avoid wearing contact lenses
Wearing contact lenses during the photoshoot of Diwali is good but you should definitely avoid them when you are near crackers or are about light firecrackers. The reason for this is pretty simple, firecrackers emit a large amount of heat and contact lenses can react with this heat. This results in severe irritation and can also cause water coming out of the eyes. It is always best to wear your eyeglasses during the Diwali season.
5. Stay away from the smoke
According to a recent study, the major reason for people suffering from loss of vision or poor eyesight has been attributed to pollution. When your eyes come near smoke they can cause a lot of pain and irritation, resulting in redness. It is always advisable Diwali that you don’t go near smoke if your eyes are sensitive to smoke.
What to do in case your eye gets injured?
In case of an accident, immediately contact emergency medical services. Keep in mind not to rub, rinse or apply ointment to the eye as It may make the injury worse or difficult to examine. It is always advised to never use dangerous firecrackers which can damage the eye. Any injury to the eye should never be treated lightly and you should visit your nearest doctor immediately.
Just by taking these simple precautionary steps, you will be able to protect your eyes from fireworks this Diwali without worrying about the safety of your loved ones. It is always advisable that you visit your eye doctor regularly and get your checkup done. Happy celebrations!
